Pop Pass vs Cover-1

Pop pass vs Cover-1 looks great — until the LB you're reading is blitzing. Here's the matchup.

Pop pass vs. cover-1 is a matchup gamble. The slot WR is in man with a nickel or LB; the QB reads the LB filling the run. If the LB you're reading is the same defender covering the slot, you've got nothing to read.

From the offense

The fix is to read a different defender. If the slot is in man with the nickel, read the safety. If the safety drops to fit the run, throw the pop with the safety pulled. If the safety stays deep, hand off into a 6-man box.

Man coverage on the slot makes the throw harder — you're throwing into a tight window with the defender in the receiver's hip pocket. The pop is best on the slot's outside shoulder so the defender's leverage takes him out of the play.

From the defense

Cover-1 wants to take away the pop by playing inside leverage on the slot. If the nickel can sit on the slot's inside, the seam route is gone.

Blitzing the read defender is a great cover-1 answer to pop. Now the QB's read is gone — and an unblocked rusher is in his face in 1.5 seconds.
