Pop Pass vs Cover-2
Pop pass vs Cover-2 is the seam shot every offense wants. Here's the read and the timing.
Pop pass vs. cover-2 is a seam shot. The two safeties are split wide, the apex is in a hook drop, and the slot WR pops up the seam. That's a 12-15 yard chunk on rhythm if the read is right.
From the offense
The QB reads the LB filling the run. If the LB triggers, throw the pop into the void; if the LB stays, hand off. Cover-2 LBs usually trigger downhill on a run action — making this the easiest pop read in football.
The receiver's stem matters. The slot needs to attack the seam from the inside foot, not run a flat or angle route. If the receiver drifts wide, the safety can drop and take it.
From the defense
Cover-2 vs. pop wants the LB to stay disciplined. Easier said than done — the run action is the same as inside zone, and most LBs are taught to fit aggressively.
A Tampa-2 wrinkle (Mike to deep middle) is the answer. The Mike covers the pop seam from the back, and the LB can fit the run cleanly.
