Bubble Screen — The RPO Cure-All

The bubble screen is the easy answer to a light box. A coach's guide to the read, the timing, and the run/pass conflict it forces.

The bubble screen is a slot receiver who pivots around and catches a quick out-toss from the QB while the outside receiver(s) block. Tagged to a run play, it becomes the simplest RPO in the game: if the box is light, hand it off; if the alley defender is missing, throw the bubble.

Its staying power is in the math. The QB counts hats in the box vs. blockers and decides post-snap. The defense's options are bad: bring a safety down to fit the run and the bubble has a numbers advantage; stay 2-high and the run gets the box.

The variants matter. Slow-bubble waits a half-count for the alley defender to commit. Fast-bubble breaks the line of scrimmage immediately. Tunnel-bubble lets the slot run upfield while the outside WR cracks down. Each beats a different look. Coaches install one and add the others as the season goes.
